If you’ve ever tried getting into modular synthesis, you know it’s a complicated topic. It can feel overwhelming with all the different terminology and techniques you need to memorize. To hopefully make understanding modular a little easier, here’s an oversimplification of the topic.

What Is Modular Synthesis

One of the simplest ways to think of modular synthesis is as a customizable instrument. When you go modular, you make every part of your setup accessible and tweakable. Within this system are individual modules with unique functions and purposes. Utilizing these given modules allows for expressional freedom in creating and experimenting with whatever soundscape you wish.

The components

Modules

As mentioned before, the central part of the system is the modules themselves. Each module you use will be for a specific purpose, intended to create sounds efficiently. The most basic modules you’ll see are

  • An oscillator
  • A filter
  • A mixer
  • An amplifier

Cases and Power

The case is the rig that holds the modules of your choice in their place. A rig can come in many sizes and forms, like an old shoebox or a suitcase. Like your entire system, this case can also be made from complete scratch.

The capacity of a case is measured in HP (horizontal pitch), and modules are built to exact dimensions in HP.

When it comes to the power supply, it’ll usually arrive within the case. This is especially true when you buy your cases from synth shops like Perfect Circuit. However, in some instances, you may need a separate module explicitly made for power.

Patch Cables

One of the most straightforward accessories of a modular system is the patch cables. These patch cables carry the signal flow from one module to another. Depending on how you want your system to run and organize, you can purchase your cables, focusing more on the color, the length, or a mix of both.

Why Use It

One of the most appealing aspects of building your modular system is the freedom that comes with it. Regarding pre-built synths, the workflow can feel confined to a set way of doing things.

With a modular system, however, you can approach it and make sounds however you prefer. This also allows you to create sounds you would otherwise find impossible on even the most flexible software synths.

Conclusion

Now, is this everything there is about modular synthesis? Of course not, but hopefully, it’s a good start.

If you are interested in trying this out for yourself but don’t want to spend money, you can try using something like VCV Rack, a free alternative. Otherwise, try to be patient when learning about modular and enjoy experimenting.
