The Line Between Musician and Listener
If you’ve spent any time with an interest in learning music, chances are it stems from a love of listening.
Listening to your favorite tracks on repeat, zeroing in on movie soundtracks, and becoming hypnotized with anything else that’ll tickle the eardrums.
It didn’t matter how much time had already been spent; if I found a song that hooked me, there was no going back.
However, once I started making my own, I thought my blind love for music would carry over to the production.
How very wrong I was.
I didn’t learn until later that there’s a line between a musician and a listener.
That line comes in the form of Detail.
It sounds basic as hell, but when you’re a listener, you overlook all the minute details.
Details like, “Do these sounds layer together well,” “How long should the build-up be,” or “What vibe am I going for?”
Although the difference may not be an integral part of becoming a musician, I think knowing the line between the two can help improve the mindset of any producer.
Sure, mindset isn’t everything, but it shouldn’t be overlooked, as it can make or break a producer in the long run.
