How Can I Enhance the Vibe of My Track?
Something always sticks out when listening to a good song, and that’s the vibe. No matter the song or the time, I get lost in the vibe of the tracks I find myself listening to.
However, as I’ve continued to traverse the world of chill music production, I have found that trying to get a certain vibe isn’t always as easy as it seems. Despite that, there are some ideas I tend to try when attempting to enhance the vibe of my music.
Identify The Emotions
Remember that the vibe of your track is essentially the emotional heartbeat of the song. Therefore, a simple way to enhance the vibe of your track is to get a better handle on what emotion is supposed to be conveyed.
Another side of the coin is considering the story and finding ways to tell it more clearly. To help, while producing, try asking questions like:
- Is this meant to be happy or sad?
- Should it feel cold?
- Maybe warm?
- Is it bright or dark?
Once you have a good idea, translate it into the confines of music. You can do this through sound design and the key(s) you choose for the song.
For example, let’s say the intro is meant to be bright, and as it transitions into the verse, it’s meant to have a more despairing feel. You could achieve this effect by starting with a major chord progression and slowly switching to a minor one with a few major key melodies playing in the background.
When referring to sound design, you can have the chords played by a guitar, which tends to feel more cheerful, and when switching to the verse, have a layer of slow ambient piano on top to reinforce the despair while maintaining a little bit of that brightness.
Use Reference Tracks
There’s a good chance that whatever vibe you’re shooting for, someone has already found it. This is where reference tracks come into play. A reference track is exactly as it sounds: a track you have set aside to use as a reference when mixing your music.
If you find a song with the vibe you’re shooting for, don’t be shy about using it while you mix your song. Think about what aspects make it work where yours doesn’t. Why does their song feel so happy? How does it feel so fast-paced despite the slow rhythm?
When it comes to enhancing the vibe of your music, it all comes down to the emotional beats you can convey with your sounds.
