4 Compelling Myths About Producing Music
Some of the most misleading production advice
With the internet being what it is today, there’s no limit to the production advice you can find. However, not all this knowledge is gold; some is complete poppycock. Below are my top 4 myths to remove from your reservoir of production advice.
#1: Samples are a cheat
Sampling is one of the most versatile tools in the kit of a music producer. It has also been the foundation of many groundbreaking tracks by massive stars like Kanye West and Rihanna. Although, in its base form, using samples can feel a little like cheating, it shines when used with love and creativity. Even though it does have a simpler side, using samples in your music is in no way cheating the system.
#2: Only some DAWS can make professional music
A great way to think of the DAW you use is as an instrument. You have to learn its ins and outs, get a nice workflow, and figure out the sweet minute details to create some truly phenomenal music. With all that in mind, you shouldn’t be in the mindset that you have to choose the “right” DAW. In reality, there isn’t a “right” DAW; there are the DAWs that work for YOU and the ones that don’t.
#3: Only work when you feel inspired
It doesn’t matter what creative activity you choose to spend your time doing; if you want to turn it into a career, you’ve got to learn how to work even when inspiration is scarce.
The reason is simple: your inspiration won’t always align with your deadlines. No one knows when their next inspiration hit will strike, and the cold truth is that those hits could come weeks apart.
#4: You need fancy, expensive equipment for success
Some producers make a living with nothing but headphones and a cheap laptop. Hell, some don’t even have a laptop and just use an iPad or phone. There are some limitations to using something as simple as a phone, but the point remains the same: you can make a living with little equipment if you know what you’re doing.
There are a ton more, but these are just what I believe to be the most said. Despite the many misleading facts you can find, please always look for more info about music production and keep learning.
